Chapter Nineteen

Makeysha

I gasped. “Where?”

“Our tour guide isn’t quite so human. Which means he probably just saw our whole interaction with your lovely angel friend back there.”

The incident with Apnastin had left me reeling. I’d never in a million years have considered him any kind of threat. He seemed so genuine and true in the few weeks I’d known him before everything happened. The fact he was behind part of Lucifer’s plan had slotted some jigsaw pieces into place. Now I knew Lucifer was being handed the archangels on a plate, things just got a whole lot more complicated for us.

I looked over the twenty or so human heads in front of me, focusing on the tour guide. He seemed human enough—at a glance. His aura was tinged with the grey edge of a regular human, his appearance also that of a regular human, but his eyes gave him away. As he turned around to smile and wave at his herd of tourists, the sun shone into his eyes, highlighting the emerald green energy hiding behind them.

“Lasander,” I whispered. “Sneaky boy.”

Ronin shrugged his shoulders. “He’s just doing what elves do best—hiding in plain sight.”

“And hypnotising a load of people to follow him to their deaths.”

“Creature’s gotta eat.”

I looked at him out of the corner of my eye. “Since when are you a creature sympathiser?”

“I’m not,” he said, grinning. “I’m just saying he’s doing what he does best.”

“Well, at least it’s not a bunch of kids,” I said, sighing. “It could be worse.”

Ronin looked at me and frowned.

“The Pied Piper of Hamelin,” I said, smirking. “You’re looking at him.”

Ronin’s mouth dropped open. “No...really?”

I nodded. “He still uses his flute now and again.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because I can hear it. Wherever he is, if he plays that supernatural instrument, I can hear it. It’s almost like I’m being warned so I can do something about it.”

“Have you ever tried?”

Sadness and shame clenched my heart. “No...there comes a point where you have to understand that the circle of life does indeed have to play a part. This world is seriously over populated. Tragic things are sometimes the natural way of cleaning that up. When we ascend to Heaven, it’s one of the first things we learn to understand. There has to come a point where we can’t interfere and sometimes, we have to let things play out.”

“I get that, but creatures aren’t natural.”

“No...but they’ve fit into the ecosystem as if they are.”

“If that’s the way you think then why are you so concerned about Lucifer?”

“Because killing all or most of this world is just plain wrong. Population control for a natural order of life is exactly that—a part of life. The Universe will have written into their soul journeys that that’s an experience of death they must have, so it happens.”

“Following an elf to their deaths is a part of their soul journey?”

“For some, yes. For others, being eaten by a shark is an experience they must have or dying peacefully in their sleep.
